At Physio and Pilates In Motion we know that treating an injury is an intricate process. What treatment is best for you? Hands-on treatment, or exercise therapy? The winning formula is… you need both. And here’s why:
Hands-on treatment is essential for helping to mobilise our muscles, joints and soft tissue. This is a great way to even out muscle imbalances and it helps us to get the body ready for further rehabilitation and exercise. Hands-on therapies also help us to maintain the great changes we see from our treatment, which in turn helps to prevent injuries in the future.
Hands-on treatment is a “passive” type of treatment, which means the therapist is using their hands-on treatment to affect your body. While this sounds great, there is an essential part of the rehabilitation process that is missing here…
In order to make lasting longer term progress, we must include the brain and nervous system in our treatment. Our bodies are made up of fascinating nerve pathways that form connections between our brain and our muscles and joints. In everyday life, we rely on our body’s own personal “autopilot” to enable us to move about and perform all the wonderful tasks we do each day. This autopilot is created over many years. Most of the time our autopilot works well for us. But sometimes we can get into movement pattern habits that don’t serve our bodies so well. This is when injuries can occur.
In order to make changes to our autopilot we need to engage in “active” treatment, which means you are using your body and nervous system to affect your body. This comes in the form of specialist exercises and movement therapy. Under the care of an experienced Physiotherapy, you can learn to fine tune your autopilot, to make sure it is working well for your body and helping you go from strength to strength.
“Over many years I have seen Physiotherapists and Sport Massage Therapists with various aches and pains. Recently, following a recommendation I have had several appointments with Charlotte and Gary Chapman for hip and leg pains, at Physio & Pilates in Motion at Market Deeping. I have found both Charlotte and Gary to be most professional, dedicated and most importantly effective in locating the sources of my pain. My exercise programme from Charlotte has helped me enormously to improve my pain and mobility. What a combination they are, as they work very closely together to identify and treat areas of concern.”
